This week, we’re intensely excited to launch the newest and most deliciously offbeat addition to the Oxney range. Introducing the 2017 Classic Pinot Meunier, our traditional-method sparkling wine made from 100% Pinot Meunier grapes.
As a variety, Meunier is rarely celebrated in its own right. Most often it plays second or third fiddle to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the blend. But we wanted to see what it could do if we gave it the spotlight all to itself… and it turns out to be a bit of a superstar.
This wine is a chameleon of complexity, revealing something new with every sip. In true Oxney style, the fruit shines through in all its ripe, healthy organic glory. But there’s so much else here, owing to some interesting decisions we made in the winery. We fermented in oak, which contributes toasty, spicy notes; and trialled some lees stirring to intensify the autolytic flavours.
So, what does it taste like? Well, we can safely say that no other Oxney wine has generated so many out-there tasting notes. Christmas cake, bakewell tart and frozen cherry yoghurt are our favourite descriptions so far. And the texture almost defies the laws of physics, somehow managing to flit from tangy and pure to soft and creamy in the course of a single sip.
If that sounds like a wine you just have to try, do not wait to act on that impulse. We made just 533 bottles and once word gets around, it will not last long. As ever, our online shop is the place to buy – at least until our vineyard tours start up again next spring (or call us and we’ll open up the vineyard shop).
